a sprout

sprouts are so beautiful...I have a special feel for them today. My plants are much better. Something curious happened the other day with my potus transplant. I'm not sure what the english translation of "potus" is and I don't feel like looking it up. Anyhow, Potus is the spanish name for your typical indoor plant that is shaped like a heart and whose stubs grown into long arms that fall downward like scarfs. I kept my transplants in two jars filled with water. A couple of months passed before they began growing.

I like to meditate looking at my plants. I try to concentrate on their color and the way the leaves hold themselves to the stub. I guess I was distraught the last time I looked at them, because my eyes began to wander to the back of the leaves. And there, wit behold, I found encrypted minute letters. My potus had stigmas all over them. I grabbed my reading glasses and began to read these mysterious printed words. Besides being in very small print, the words had horrific misspellings, and switched languages continuously. There were cases where three languages coexisted in the same word. I immediately went for my notebook and transcribed all I could understand of these writings.

"It went on and on. The tempest around me. And I hurt my singing hand. It was hit against the wall and now it swollen aches me. They put sunglasses over my eyes so that no one would read me ever and I would be protected. Only the brave that dared mergulhar and retirar the shades. save not need be brave for it, the monster could trap you too. but he's too busy with me underneath his muscled hairy armpits, digging his knucles in my head. james dean, is this spiral that surrounds. I had a gift, una pua y una carta, illusions broadend by speech. the dry river of my solitude."

The other leaves had these inscriptions.

"It was just because I coudnt keep the child in the house, i left the door open and he ran away to buy some cigarettes. everyday I'm looking for a babysitter and no one answers my phone calls. not to show it to you but my trombone playing has gotten batter throughout these years, I still get out tune, I still cant play a fifth above.

do you understand my i dont/ "

This morning when I woke up, I went to look at the leaves and the inscriptions were gone.

ARIEL
yo ya vi Madagascar uno y dos.

PEDRO
bueno, te va mandar madagascar tres.

ARIEL
yo no quiero madagascar tres, yo quiero kung fu panda.

PEDRO

ARIEL
Pa

PEDRO
que?

ARIEL
vos dormis con marta?

PEDRO
si hijo, dormimos juntos.

ARIEL
marta no me quiere.

PEDRO

ARIEL
no me gusta dormir en mi cama

PEDRO

Pedro intenta calmarlo.

PEDRO
bueno, bueno, veni vamos a comprar garrapinada.

ARIEL
yo quiero ver a los perros.

PEDRO

Television

A small raft of cold wind enters the room and moves straight to my mouth as I lay half asleep. It comes from the heater; to be precise the wind is let in by a hole in the wall where the heater's fan is implanted. My mattress is placed on the floor and I sleep with my pillow facing the heater so that I can breathe the morning's first breeze. Despite the wake-up call, it is the last holiday of the year and I decide to stay in bed a couple of hours more. I lay lazy with the covers gently blowing at my cheek.

I dreamt with the color green. It was in the same streets I had wondered the night before, but tinted with an oaktree green that gave a warm feeling to my unconsciousness. As if everything was made of grass I met the usual fellows that hugged me and kissed me violently, and was interrupted by the same feelings of friendliness and mockery brought upon the changing figures around me. Everyone's eyes was the color of basil before waking up once again.

My mother had already left. She always wakes up early, even without placing an alarm clock. It was as if she spent the entire day planning to be awake at 7am the next morning. Just one of those things she trained herself to do as the years passed, like leaving the apple stubs in empty tea cups. But her awakening didn't affect me since I'm a grown adult and have no parent-brought obligation to rise with the morning dew and get a head start. So my mother left me sleeping and went on to do her things; fix her hair, make anita (her 98 year old friend) her breakfast, take a taxi cab to anita's house, etc.

Meanwhile with my face under the blue blankets, my eyes half here, half there, I lifted my legs so high as to touch the cealing. This is how I get up from bed on days like these. Then I made a ninety degree turn, struggled with my arms until the bed let go of me, and placed my feet on the floor. The day was an uncertainty at the same time that it was seduced by routine. I hoovered to the living room area and stretched my arms like a panda bear and began to scratch my head. It is in these moments that I felt most like a teddy bear that had been left three days underneath the dirty clothes in the corner of the room. The living room smelt of cats sleeping on the sofa, as usual, with Brigitte a bellied spotted sinking in between two of the white sofa cuchins, her neck stretched and her eyes tight.

After I improvised the typical holiday lunch at 2pm from what was left and eatable in the refrigerator, I could think of nothing better to acompany my meal than a good couch seating in front of the television and next to Brigitte being more and more swallowed by the white monster sofa. If I was lucky I too would be eaten by the sofa and end up in some obliged vacations on a cloudless white valley made out of cotton, where sheep dominate shepards and marshmellows grow small-medium-big on white bushes next to white wine lakes.

With the plate on my lap, armed with fork and a control remote, I pressed the red "on" button and the black screen was invaded by the image of an animation made out of cut papel mache arranged to characterize houses, little people, and a basic scenery of a snowed topped mountain in the far distance. It wasn't long until I began changing the channel. Next there was a cartoon animation of an orange tiger on top of a very thin tree branch. The tree swabbed from left to right as the tiger opened his eyes wide with fright. He said "No me gustan los arboles" and continued to wabble from one side to the other. I took a bite of my brown rice with tomatoes, avocato, and parmesean cheese.

Past the children programing channels I saw a familiar face being interviewed. It was Kathi Griffin, a redheaded outspoken comedian born in the United States. I had grown familiar with her in my years spent as an adolescent who studied comedians that were given sitcoms or were invited to the late show, conan o'brian, or Jay leno. I thought she was a relatively funny person, but held no admiration for her. She said "....and she came with me to hand out flyers and then there was a line in the comedy factory that turned the corner, it was a miracle" and a narrator's voice, with a neutral spanish in a profound tenor's voice, continued

While the narrator spoke the screen showed images of the comedy factory, a grey building with neon lights above the entrance. Then apeared Margaret Cho, an asian-american comedian with a round body and an oval face. She spoke of Kathi,

"kathi has no filter, and she will use in her act the information that is confined to her by her celebrity friends. It's part of who she is. There are people that wont speak to kathi because she made fun of them in her act"

I had already finished half of my lunch, leaving for last the cheese and the avocato, when an african american appeared on the screen, with a beautifully curled hair backgrounded by a pink wall.

"watching kathi is literaly like going out with your girlfriends. you gossip about people you know, you laugh. and kathi wont hold anything back."

The narrator's voice returned and fotos of kathi posing next to various people took the screen once again.

The image of the current, mature, redheaded Kathi returned. Her blue eyes were glassy and on the verge of tears when she said pointedly "I thought it was the biggest failure of my entire life."

Not in the mood for comertials, I decided to explore through the next channels. A speeding race car, a soccer player agonizing on the field with his knees folded on his arms, and a golf ball flying in the open air were some of the scenes by which I passed as a I pressed the "^" button. I detained myself on a male face with a dark beard and blue eyes, he was on a courtyard and you could see the green woods behind him. He wore a period suit, with high shoulders and velvet cloth. Looking straight forward to the gray sky he was met by the slender body of a woman in her mid thirties, with strawberry-blond curls falling on her back. She wore a white dress that covered her legs completely, and the sleeves were half cut showing her porcelain arms. She placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered in his ear "father will be detained in a meeting with the lords this afternoon, the maids have been dismissed and sister was sent for her violin lessons in the chapel..."

The scenery imnediatly mutated into an that of an african american wearing a flowered shirt and a pair of sunshades walking by city streets filled with traffic signs and cars. A music with a funky bass line adorned with a syncopaded electric guitar backed by a steady tempo was played while the black man crossed the streets with his golden bracelets swinging from his wrists as his hands laid still underneath the pockets of his bell-bottom pants. I began to think who's boyfriend I would steal if given the chance, and what strategy I would use. I guess I would simply let it happen, or maybe I'd write a note saying "I think I'm in love with you" and let him decide. I was astonished at how highly I thought of my natural seduction as I sat with a plate of left overs on my lap and the control remote on my hand, half swollen by the couch, and half hypnotised by the television. This produced me a laugh and a change of channel, just when the african american was about to get into a brown ford with a hollahoop doll placed moving her waist to a fro above the glove conpartment.

Kathi appeared in what seemed a celebrity event, such as an opening of a debut, being interviewed with a white light iluminating her face. She was wearing a black chall and was amongst a crowd of people with dresses and tuxedos. She said in a discreet tone "he doesn't know we're getting divorced. poor thing. so we're trying to be friends for these last events he's accompaning me to. well, you know how it is. love fades."

Jude Law and Natalie Portman were looking at eachother. Natalie Portman had short hair and a coat with a feathered neck as she stood crying and looking straight at Jude Law. "did you ever love me?" Jude Law, wearing a black sweeter and with his eyes set on Natalie Portman said
"I love, and I will always love you" he came near her and hugged her. For which, coughed by tears, she said
"you won't be happy with her, you'll miss me. I'm the one who's supposed to leave you" she gave him a kiss. He hugged and kissed her. Still in his arms she told him
"go make some tee." It was night and after he began to heat the water he noticed she was gone. She left the door open in a quick and impulsive getaway. He ran outside to the street and called
"Alice.."

Sweet Berry juice- episode one

DAY ONE

There are trees all around, coloring de scenery with a warm green. The breeze is gentle, and the lighting is subtle. There is small cottage made out of wood in between pine trees. The truck pulls in and from the driver’s seat comes CECILIA dressed in a loose gardener’s clothes, topping the outfit with a baseball cap. Her clothes are very dirty, and her hair is glued to her front, underneath the cap. She walks towards the cottage and knocks on the door.

The whistling of birds can be heard near and distant. The grass is wild. Nevertheless, the cottage is quite taken care of. A voice from inside the cottage is heard.

PAUL
Who is it?

CECILIA
Cecilia

PAUL
coming..

The squeak of an old sofa can be heard, followed by some footsteps. The door opens and PAUL(played by Chris Cooper) appears holding the knob. He is a very tall man of near 45 years old. His clothes are neat, his hair is pulled back in a pony tail and his green eyes look down at Cecilia with a smile. Cecilia looks back at him with a more held back atittude, but displaying an honest smile.

PAUL
howdy

CECILIA
howdy

Paul opens the door wider and lets way for Cecilia to walk by and into the small cottage. He closes the door behind her. Cecilia looks around, she sees pictures, strange objects, and even some clothes scattered around. Paul goes to the kitchenet behind the bar and opens the refrigirator.

CECILIA
I really love this place.

PAUL
you know you’re welcome anytime

CECILIA
yeah, I know

PAUL
what do you want sugar? beer? juice? water? coke?

CECILIA
juice. is it fresh?

PAUL
its homemade berry juice from the bushes outside.

CECILIA
I’ll have some juice then.

Paul takes the vase with the berry juice and pours some into two cup. He places the filled cups in a tray, along with a bowl of cookies and the vase with the juice. He lifts the tray and takes it to the small table in front of the sofa.. Cecilia is already seated. Paul puts down the tray, sits down next to Cecilia and passes her cup of juice, taking his cup in his other hand. Cecilia takes a sip.

CECILIA
ummm. it’s perfect.

PAUL
this season brought some nice berries.

CECILIA
I wish I could I drink this everyday.

Paul laughs.
PAUL
(laughing) I bet. I do. but it isn’t always season, and it doesn’t always turn out like that.

CECILIA
well, no one is perfect. right?

PAUL
you said it. I like how we’re getting started.

Cecilia looks down, with a doubtfull smile.

CECILIA
Yeah...I don’t know. there are so many things I don’t know.

PAUL
me too, there must be a thousand things I don’t know.

CECILIA
you know me.

PAUL
yes, I do know you quite well.

CECILIA
look at me? how am I doing?

PAUL
if you want I can tell you that you’re doing fine. and it’ll be true. you’re doing fine.

CECILIA
fine isn’t well enough

PAUL
let me finish, let me finish.. you are doing fine, and fine is good enough and completely perfect. But you’re the only one who can really answer that question.

we had a chat

Michigan was unconfortable from the beggining of the conversation. "quick fidgeting!" Thought Leandro. Yet Michigan felt at ease with herself, and would never have guessed she was drumming her fingers on the metal ash tray. Leandro stirred his cup of milk and looked at the yellow wall paper, losing his blue eyes in an abstraction. Michigan kept eating the cookies she brought wondering why Leandro wouldn't dip his cookies. But he just kept starring at the wall and taking occasional sips of his plain chocolate milk.

"my hipothesis is that the law of atraccion is bullshit"

He finally removed his eyes from the wall and placed them on Michigan. A wave of thought reactions surrounded him. "but the paper is due on monday" was his response.

"I'm out of the paper. I'm dropping out. You can erase my name. I'm sorry if I caused you trouble when you believed in me, and if now you feel disappointed at me, and I understand if you never want to speak to me again."

When Michigan left Leandro sat in front of his computer in the verge of tears. He was going to erase her name from the term paper wondering how he became such a fool as to trust her. And he also felt sorry for her, he imagined her future as an unemployed single mother in the middle of nowhere. He even thought of her as a whore. He began to read the paper and to remember all their meetings and endless chats. Each paragraph was developed after an extensive share of thoughts and impressions. All had lost their significance.

He finished reading the paper, and concluded.

"the law of atraction is bullshit"

CARS

“mujeres?”
“no, automoviles.”

Rodger Hodgson

Me encantaria conocerlo.

Found

I've gotten used to the noises that come from my window. Buses, cars, laughs and celular phones. Even the earthquake from the subway pass unnoticed. But today I heard a siren that blew my ear drums. So I got up from my piano and walked to the entrance downstairs, just to see if we had been attacked yet.

Everything was as usual, it must have been a false alarm. Or it must have sounded in my head. The day looked atractive, as did the people that passed by me as I stood by the door. It was good oportunity to go for a walk and run some errands. So I locked the door behind me and headed south towards the river.

I walked a couple of blocks, half in extasis of what I was doing, half wishing I was back home practicing scales. while crossing a street I found a letter lying on the floor. I picked it up thinking it was a promise for "gauchito hill." The text was as follows:

I hope someday this person will forgive himself for whatever nonsence came from his speach, as I too have regrets.

Green water for breakfast

Once read a poem about a seed becoming a monster after an acid rainstorm. That image was printed in my mind and to this day I can't eat soy sprouts. My interpretation at the time was that evil came desguised as nurture, as an altered component in a substance that is basic to human and plant life alike. What does acid rain taste like? If I put an empty cup in the balcony next time it rains, what color will the water have? I imagine a flared green.

I don't think the world will end.
